A local ATC SM100 owner has stated that my system sounds better than
practically any other system he's heard (including 'this one'
(http://cgi.audioasylum.com/systems/663.html)). I use Linkwitz
Orions.

I am guessing this would be the same as the coax digital output.
The analog outputs, on the other hand, use the internal Burr Brown DAC.
I am using the coaxial digital output (with an external DAC) and the
linear PS does make a very noticeable difference, for the better.

I'd second the ATC/Meridian options (+SB2/3).I don't think an SB1 would
cut it in that setup. The BW sub (the round one) is a good alternative
to various REL's.
The savings on speaker cable (and analogue interconnects if you use the
digital version of the Meridians) are worth making.

Opinions are wildly divided on the if's and why's of your question. In
my system, the Farnell supply changed the sound via my MF X-DACv3. My
personal view is that the stock wall-wart puts out something (RF?) that
can be picked up by the system and has a deleterious effect on the
sound.

Here's another vote for ATC speakers. Something to consider regarding
the subwoofer issue is that Quads ESLs (well, I've only ever heard 57s
and 63s) pretty much need a subwoofer due to their restricted bass
response. Speakers like ATC SCM100s and 50s have pretty good bass on
their own. Even the
The cost is minimal, but it's a bit difficult to find a PSU that you can
simply replace the wallwart with, without doing any assembly. If you do
find one, please post it!

Thanks for the replies, I ended up going with my first idea as I got a
pair of these for £150 for the bedroom system:

They are a steal for that price.

Well, at full brightness the SB3
The highest current draw I've seen is 0.93 Amp at full brightness. With
the display off, it went down to 0.80 Amp. I was using an Iso-Tech

I have Power One 3A supply and it instantly made a very noticeable
improvement in every aspect of the sound of my system, lows to highs,
dynamics and tonal quality. I got the PS for free, so I have no bias
about the improvement. Without a case, the PS is very ugly lying on the

Observed with what? You need a MHz (ms) fast scope to clearly see
current during low frequency transients. Compare directly to the stock
wallwart on the same scope. A handheld digital multimeter will not
reveal the differences.

Nuforce Reference9SE power amps are very small and sound incredible.
Martin Logan Voyage in-wall speakers are the best sounding in walls in
the world, impressive to every high end reviewer that has ever written
about them. You will see 2 attractive, curvy paint colored rectangles

Thanks- sounds like some folks have used the Elpac withut any real
problems, so maybe I will start there.
The rest of the system is a Naim CD player, a YBA Passion Integrated

Hey Gang!
So...I have built several of these 5 volt 3 amp - fused - linear power
supplies for a member. I have made all the templates and have all the
supplies to take orders for anyone interested in one... or several. I
have got quite efficient at pumping these out.
Anyone who has done the
I got them on eBay, the seller really needed to get rid of them becuase
he had lost his job.
Sleepysurf - are you sure you actually got a PAIR for just $309
(equiv. to £175). Pro monitors are typically advertised as per ITEM
and not per pair. That price seems more like what they sell each

Easy mistake, I nearly fell for that myself when I first started looking
at pro gear. They do come up on eBay though so don't give up.
I am actually searching for a second hand LSR12P subwoofer to match the
LSR25P's. My research indicates that it's pretty hot. If I find one,

I was originally going to buy the Swans M200's, but they have been
out-of-stock forever at Newegg.
The Swans website lists another slick looking powered speaker with
great specs, the S200A...

Hmmm, nice. They're made in China right? A sign of things to come!
