Analogue volume control requires that Digital Volume Control is set to
Volume controls adjust digital outputs? When did this change? With
either setting, the analogue output levels are adjusted by the volume
buttons - erm, not anymore?

It's still supposed to happen on occasion - it does have a purpose.
