Guy,

Yes, very sad, but Themis is right, if only redbook was like this, I
feel I have 300 cd´s I no longer want to listen to.
Anyway, I converted one album to WAV, and well, I didnt do comparisons
yet, but a bit more volume (gain), and more kbps in the file is
obvious.
And, suddenly ITunes wont
I've been looking into my Squeezebox Receiver (SBR) specifications and
I've come across some figures I don't understand. Maybe one of the
resident experts could help explain.
In the SBR is a Wolfson WM8522 DAC. The manuafacturers of this DAC unit
claim a THD+N value of -85dB. I've attached the
If I recall properly, THD+N and SNR on dacs depend on signal bit depth
and sampling. It's usually not the same for 16/44.1, 24/48 and 24/96.
Perhaps this explains the small differences ?

A DAC chip doesn't do anything by itself - it's part of a whole system,
requiring externally provided power, data, clocks, filtering, and
amplification. The DAC chip manufacturers specify a worst case or CYA
value in their data sheets. This is a nominal figure which usually

Also, a key selling point of any DAC is the total system cost - that's
the DAC chip itself plus the handful of other components required. The

the maximum possible performance that the part is capable of, but rather

Sean,
Thanks for explaining that, I fully understand now.
Much obliged.

I'm setting up a dedicated headphone listening station and I'm wondering
if there's any difference between the SB3 or the Duet as far as sound
quality? I have both. Any preference for optical or coax for digital
out to my DAC? And, although this may not be the appropriate place for
this question,
I have the Headroom Desktop and external power supply. It has the
updated Max electronics and Max DAC. Sennheiser 600 and AKG 701

So, imho, as a digital transport, you should not notice any difference
between the SB3 and the Receiver. Te SBR has a tad better S/N ratio but
I doubt you can make the difference on a headphone (except perhaps the
Shure, I couldn't anyway).
Theoretically, coax digital is better,
If you're using the digital out than it doesn't matter. The SPDIF
section is identical between the Classic and Receiver.
I use the analog outs on my Classic to my headroom headphone amp

Do you not believe that a better DAC makes a difference or just don't
have one in that particular setup? I intend to try it both ways, just
interested in your opinion. Thanks.

The SPDIF outs bypass the DAC, so that is not a factor.
And as I said, the SPDIF sections between the 2 products are
identical... as in exactly the same. :)
If you are going digital out, then there is zero difference between
Squeezebox Receiver and Squeezebox Classic.
As for analog I cannot

Yes, they are, but.
There are some, I repeat, -some- minor sidebands in the SPDIF output on
the SB3. These are 60 Hz related. Mind you, they are down near the noise
floor.
They are absent in the Duet.
Might mean absolutely nothing, but it gives you something to stay awake
