the difference was startling,
almost as if I were listening to a completely different source! Don't
ask me why, because I haven't a clue. BTW, the coax was the better of
the two.

- The optical signal needs to be converted back into an electrical
one at the other end.
Considering how fragile a digital signal can be, I would rather avoid
the above issues.

It doesn't maintain voltage (and/or supply current) for some frequencies
as well as others. For example, it might handle the big, slow surges of
LF, but not the fast, finesse of HF.
