I think the AVI derives from the same school as ATC. My Googling shows up many ATC speaker / AVI amp combinations, and I think the AVI owner is ex-ATC, or vice-versa.
The main appeal seems to be that they have the benefit of active technology but in a domestically-acceptable product. All of the others I look at have a very "studio" finish.
