Would there be any signal and/or audio degeneration if I was to use both
the digital coax and optical outs of my squeezebox 3 to two different
dacs (separate speaker and headphone setups)?

Possibly, but I have other stero equipment (both digital and analog)
hooked up elswhere and no problems and it doesn't happen when I plug
the power in, but rather when I plug the ethernet cable in and it
connects to slimserver.

As far as time and effort goes, just order one from digikey and have it
sent directly to Wayne. After I placed the order for mine, I just sat
back and less than a week later it was at my door. It couldn't be any
easier. And IMO it is totally worth it.
