I've used the K.I.C.A.S. Caliente with my Grado RS-1s, which is a
reasonably priced ($399) headphone amp. I've since upgraded to a
Maplewood Audio Design HD250, but that's probably out of your price
range.
If I were you, I'd head over to http://www.head-fi.org/ which has a

For what it's worth:
I have a bedroom system which consists of a Squeezebox Classic with the
digital outputs going into a Headroom Desktop Amp which has a built-in
DAC installed. I use it with several different headphones: a Sennheiser
HD650, an AKG K701 and an Ultrasone Proline 750. All three
I have a Beresford TC-7520 DAC and the headamp in it drives my AKG K701
pretty good. Might be something to try.

got the upgraded power supply, which made it a hefty upgrade. They also
offer the OBH-11 and I am sure the regular power supply is entirely

I think you will definitely notice the difference with a good headphone
amp and 'phones of this quality, even without a dedicated DAC. A
dedicated DAC would be a further upgrade. I currently use a Creek
OBH-11 with Sennheiser 650s. I've been thinking of getting a Musical
Fidelity V-Can and
