I was comparing the Stereophile Transporter review to the SB3 review.
And guess what? Stereophile shows in its testing the tone observed in
this thread and others.

The right channel, however, produced ... a cluster of spectral
I reported in another thread a high pitched tone, which others have also
heard in this thread and others.
As I run all my systems without preamps, I had on order a pair of -20dB
fixed attenuators to match line levels and push my digital volume
control up to the top end for my Rotel power amp
I do not know whether this is of any use but I had both a hum (probably
50Hz or derivative) on both channels and a high level whistle on the
right channel - these were constant level. I was using the SB3 directly
from its analogue outputs into my electronic x-overs / amplifiers into
my Linkwitz

Build them. You won't be sorry. I have a pair too (fed by SB2 w/linear
PS and modded Art DIO DAC).

At least as far as I'm concerned it's not contentious that the linear
might be less noisy, or might have less EMI (which can cause problems
like a hum). What's more contentious is whether

Do you mean the SB volume or the amp volume?

I leave the SB volume at 100 - regulate volume with pre-amp
I have read in other posts that 100 is the ideal setting if using SB3
as source only and not as a pre-amp
Also, I use the analog outs - thinking about inserting a DAC - does
anyone have the hiss using the digital outs?

I have the SB3 connected via digital out to my HT.
I do NOT have the issue when using digital. I do have it on analog on
the same system.
My tone varies both by volume and pitch as brightness and density of
text on the display varies.

So you're saying the hiss is as loud with the preamp volume at max as
it is with it at zero? And that it's sensitive to the display
brightness?
That's very odd.

I've noticed that, while the buzz is much quieter with the amp volume
turned down, it's not as

If I understand your description correctly, I deduce that your amp is
picking up the noise from the SB's display at a point after the amp's

physically moving the SB?
Yeah, I thought of that too, so I

Well, that wouldn't

Skunk,
Words from the master, no less. Thanks for pointing it out.
Damn, I even looked for this using google and went
I've had my SB3 for approximately one month now, and I'm loving it.
However, I can hear an odd whistle in the right channel. I've done a
bit of cable/port/source swapping and it would appear to be caused by
the Squeezebox. The whistle's also on the headphone output.
About the noise:
