Well the one Quad speaker that needs servicing is in at IAG now - and
the conversation went a little like ..
Be honest, you don't REALLY want to sell these do you?
No not really
Then don't, Get it fixed and working then we can start enjoying some

Not to threadjack anything but I'm using a pair of Beolab 8000
(http://tinyurl.com/p3ecs)
with my SB3. Works great, the SB3 is connected directly to the speakers
and they turn on/off automatically. I've actually put my Beosound 9000
up for sale, only using the SB3 now :-)

An interesting combination - and one that I had been considering before
ATCs and Meridians were suggested.
Did you try other active speakers before settling on the Beolabs just
out of interest - and do think that they could easily fill a largish
room?

I had the Beolab's before getting the SB3. And I'll get a couple of
Beolab4's and an extra SB3 for the kitchen. The only thing I regret
about selling my BO setup is loosing the remote (Beo4) as the SB3
remote is cr*p compared to the BO.
My living room is about 40m^2 (that's...umm... 430ft^2 ?)

The ATCs take an analogue feed (using an XLR connector, which is a
professional audio connection) so you could use a DAC in front of them
if you wished. I do so, although the analogue out from the SB3 is
really pretty good.
I drive my active ATC 100's direct from the SB2
Thanks - a useful and objective response.
I spent 6 months with my 63's and someone who swore their Leaks gave
better sound, depth etc etc. After this time he admitted he had been
sucked in to the if I just add this bit trap and got into the

The Quads when standing in the subs DO certainly make a statement - and
you are not going to miss them when you go in a room. One of the
reasons for the poor WAF behind the need for change.
Do you need a DAC between the SB and a speaker - what are people's
opinions and if

Many thanks for the time and effort people are all putting into the

Food for thought - it could go either way - and please, if anyone has

A local ATC SM100 owner has stated that my system sounds better than
practically any other system he's heard (including 'this one'
(http://cgi.audioasylum.com/systems/663.html)). I use Linkwitz

I'd second the ATC/Meridian options (+SB2/3).I don't think an SB1 would
cut it in that setup. The BW sub (the round one) is a good alternative
to various REL's.
The savings on speaker cable (and analogue interconnects if you use the
digital version of the Meridians) are worth making.
It's a
Here's another vote for ATC speakers. Something to consider regarding
the subwoofer issue is that Quads ESLs (well, I've only ever heard 57s
and 63s) pretty much need a subwoofer due to their restricted bass
response. Speakers like ATC SCM100s and 50s have pretty good bass on
their own. Even the
Nuforce Reference9SE power amps are very small and sound incredible.
Martin Logan Voyage in-wall speakers are the best sounding in walls in
the world, impressive to every high end reviewer that has ever written
about them. You will see 2 attractive, curvy paint colored rectangles
on the wall, and

So keeping them is not really an option - even though I have heard
nothing that comes close when they are really singing.
Physics rules here, you can't get real bass from a 6 inch

I had thought of Meridians - thanks for the other suggestions!

Well, here's my solution: 3 small boxes and a pair of speakers:-

sound quality is definitely right up there ...

I'd second the recommendation of both the Meridian and ATC speakers.
From a sound quality perspective, although my personal preference would
be ATCs (probably the SCM20 SL Towers, the SCM50s carry a hefty price
tag and are pretty huge), if you're planning to connect straight to the
SB then the
Wow - a little overwhelmed with all the help!
Will look a little further into the Meridians and the ATCs.
I wouldn't mind keeping the 606's - any suggestions along this line of
thought? Guess I would need a pre-amp too though!
Thanks again

SB3 + Meridians would be the ultimate in simplicity and WAF.

the Sonus speakers do have a lovely finish - but which model and what
to pair them with??
Opinions / views (no troll btw - just out of the loop for a while)

I've always thought Meridian speakers had fairly high WAF, but
they are pretty pricey. Sound great, look good, cost lots. Sigh.

How much do you want to spend?

I think it is called careful purchasing.
Almost without exception I have bought my hi-fi 2nd hand (used) - at
this end of the market people TEND to take care of what they have.
That and a good inspection / audition tends to flush out the dealers /
merchants.
$6,000 = £4,000 - probably £2,500
