Great! Please let me know if you like them.

Actually, I came up with an easier solution last night. I have similar
test tones from a Stereophile Test 3 CD, and my amp has voltmeters
(just like the SB3, although they are actually analog!), so I just
adjusted each channel using the test tones (ripped to FLAC, of course),
and those voltmeters

Actually you can match them extremely closely (tenths of a dB) using
just a digital multimeter.
Press and hold power

I have thought about this potential problem myself because my system
doesn't have a preamp. I haven't checked because my SB2 is still at
Bolder, but if needed I intend to purchase thi
I would go with bludragon's suggestion above.
Make sure you use the latest nightly, and you won't suffer any
rounding, just a small reduction in effective S/N at the DAC which will
probably be at least partially compensated for by running your power amp
at higher gain.
I can pretty much guarante

I think Bludragon's advice is good. Rather than go "full-max" on the
amp output levels, set the amp to your personal max listening level
with the SB running at "fixed-output" or 40 on the digital output
scale.
That way you can run the SB digital volume level closer to 40 more
often and get bette
I'm going to stick with the digital volume control, and max out the the
amp volume. From what I've been reading here and elsewhere, the digital
volume control should not noticeably affect the signal, because it is
simply clipping the least signficant bits. Is that right?

The CD and line level inputs should be identical electrically. (CD is a
line level source).
In your setup, theoretically the best sound quality will be obtained
with the squeezebox volume set to max. Once you reduce the volume by
6dB or so, you will start to lose dynamic range coming out of you
