I have a recently purchased an SB3 that I use with a modest NAD integrated and NHT speakers in my study. I like it so much that I would like to purchase another SB3 for my family room.
The family room system is primarily HT, but with components a step up from the Big Box Stores. I am using a Parasound AVC-2500u pre/pro, a Parasound HCA-2205A multi-channel amp, and NHT 1.5's as my L/R speakers, mated with an NHT SubOne. (The rest of the system is an NHT CenterOne and more NHT 1.5's for the rear, but that may not be relevant for this question). The pre/pro is circa 2000 and utilizes a Crystal 4390 DAC. It also uses 3 Motorola 56009 DSP's. I'm not certain if the stereo-only signal is run thru the DPS's - It likely is. I also have the 5.1 analog inputs which I know do not run thru the DPS's. I am considering an upgrade from Bolder Cable. They can either upgrade the digital outputs, the analog outputs, or both. (I would also upgrade the power supply with an Elpac, to also be modded). Since I would only be using one of the outputs, which upgrade would be my best bet? In Googling the Crystal 4390 DAC, I see that it is highly regarded and used in some $5000 CD players. The upgraded DAC in the SB would be a Burr-Brown, but a better one than stock, as I understand it. The digital upgrade is cheaper, but that's not necessarily the deciding factor. Would anyone care to speculate on what I might expect from both the digital and analog upgrades in my system? In your opinion, is one choice clearly better than the other from a "listening perspective"? Both objective and subjective opinions welcome.
