As 'smplayer' supports using 'mpv' as its backend, is it possible to move
'mplayer' from the depends array of the package smplayer

optdepends array? I've installed 'mplayer-vaapi' which provides 'mplayer'

Like Armin said, mplayer-vaapi hasn't been kept in sync with mplayer
since mid–2013.
