Jason,

Just noted Raj's reply and generally agree with his advice.

I have a JVC DVX9 camera which was purchased just before the Sydney Olympics
and it has done a pretty good job overall. If I was buying now I would look
at Sony and Canon as well.

Good stuff
----------
- Size 51x125x97 (latest model claims to be world's smallest)
- JVC use "progressive scan" which allows reasonable still shot to be pulled
from an individual motion video frame.
- Has memory card system which allows still shots to card while continuously
shooting full-motion video.

Not so good
-----------
- not good in very low light / darkness (Sony and later JVC are good in
this regard I believe)
- does not have an image stabiliser system for reducing the effect of camera
movement/shaking (Canon has this and Sony I think - very useful when zoomed)
- occasionally decides head cleaning tape required at crucial moments - will
not allow shooting until cleaned
- "high" res (800kpixel) still shots available only when not shooting
full-motion. Medium res (about 600kpixel) only during shooting. (Have
since purchased a digital still camera fir stills now that prices are down
and resolution up)

If you want to edit on a laptop (rather than desktop) the ULEAD PCMCIA card
and software were great value at less than $200.

Subject: [aus-soaring] Off topic - Mini DV cameras

All

Sorry for the off-topic post, but since many of you glider pilots are also
the sort of people who'd go for the latest and greatest technology (except
perhaps the ES57 owners - LOL !), I was wondering if anyone has recently
purchased a Mini DV camera, and if so, what features / price advantage led
you to choose that particular model.

Also, any thoughts on PC-based editing tools if you have them.

Please reply directly to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED])
, rather than clogging the list.

Regards

Jason Armistead
