I’ve previously seen plenty of NOTAMs put out for comps. The aerial ambulance
would/should be aware of these and expect eg “up to 50 gliders” in the area.
(It was very entertaining at Horsham Week one year hearing what sounded like a
student pilot announcing on the radio their inbound intent

Interesting that transponders has come up again. 15 years ago NSW Gliding
Association had a very long discussion with Racal who at that time were
developing a portable transponder . the complete system was about the size of
the old brick mobile phone. Much resistance from the GFA at that time.
Did notice on my phone on "Flight Radar 24" a number of Dutch gliders
flying out Corowa last summer and you could see them on the last leg of
their triangle for the day. I assume they had Mode S transponders.
In my opinion the danger area at regional country airports is 25nm out as
the IFR aircraf

Hi Mike,
I did reflect at the time that gliders were being built for more sinister
purposes elsewhere.
