Re dongles I have the pre-paid Telstra (the best one I could buy at the time) dongle and it's brilliant. Expensive (Telstra always is) but it works really well. Was skyping Kosovo on my laptop whilst driving (Bruce was driving) the Hay Plain! It's really easy to recharge via credit card as you go..
