Erich,
The devices you list (OzFLARM, LXwhatever etc.) work well with any FLARM
update. They is available for free from our website, or for some devices from
the original manufacturer. We have supported free, periodic, mandatory updates
for over 10 years now with no major issues.
There are

The scheduled and mandatory firmware update (version 6) has been released.
The update is required for all FLARM-compatible designs. This includes
classic FLARM, PowerFLARM and FLARM manufactured by LXNA
FLARM continues to support all units ever shipped with firmware updates
(which contains increased functionality) and they remain fully compatible.
Some older hardware (now up to a decade old) is impossible to repair as
electronic parts have been discontinued and cannot be reliably replaced.

Not highly scientific, but a pretty good read about this topic:

It's interesting that billions of consumer devices can use Lithium-xxx
batteries safely (maybe one per 100 million catching fire) while Boeing with
the 'help' of FAA regulations manages to fry two out of fifty aircraft.
The Monster has become very well at running the daily business (almost no

Oz-FLARM are not IGC approved and this therefore does not apply to them.
Still a good idea to keep your xx-FLARM updated, there will be a new release
for all FLARM compatible devices soon.

Agree (mostly) with Mike, but a legal, affordable ADS-B OUT is nowhere in
sight.
In the meantime, if the Glider had an ADS-B / Transponder receiver (such as
PowerFLARM) he would 'see' the airliner (or Rex) at 10+ miles and could get
out of its flight path.
Will post some more information on Power

Volcanoes (to be more precise: Plate Tectonics) are actually carbon emission
neutral, if averaged over a few hundred million years.
The stuff that bubbles up in volcanoes has been subducted some years prior.

Dear pilot,
This is a reminder for the mandatory free software updated required now.
Every few years, all FLARM devices have to undergo a scheduled maintenance
through software update. This behavior is explained in the operating manual.
Version 4 must no longer be used; Update to software version 5
G'day mates,
We need some urgent help in final verification of the upcoming v5.00 FLARM
firmware release.
The files contain firmware for all FLARM compatible designs and original

Please note that the ADS-B system as it is being discussed in the US is
fundamentally different from ADS-B systems anywhere else in the world: The
US is planning to use UAT for the lower airspace which may allow higher
bandwidth and more services but is incompatible with 1090ES which is used

Hi,
The pinout of the RJ-45 and RJ-12 on all FLARM (Oz, Lx, Swiss, …) complies with
the IGC specification (except that they also provide 3V out for remote
displays).

But BMW Oracle still missed the big right wind shift in race #2 ;-)
Didn't matter, as they had a wing instead of a sail -> mch quicker

FLARM in all of its compatible versions (e.g. OzFLARM, miniOZ) should
fulfill the requirements as "Position Recorders" after a firmware update
which allows calibration of the pressure sensor.
It is, of course, up to the national authority to approve devices as
"Position Recorders".

The MITRE device is a prototype for UAT ADS-B (Australia uses 1090MHz ADS-B
which is incompatible).

Furthermore it is transmit only and MITRE has no intention of developing a
certifiable, usable product.

Stealth mode inherently reduces some of the benefits of FLARM's situation
awareness for yourself and surrounding aircraft. We DO NOT
RECOMMEND the use of Stealth mode, but it is better than turning FLARM off for
tactical reasons during competitions.
