Dear All

Numerous people from this list have contacted me individually asking for
more info about the auto pulley launch system that we have been working
on in Western Australia. I decided that it would be very beneficial if
all the knowledge related to this form of launching could be shared in a
group forum and many pilots have indicated that once it has been set up
they will join. I also anticipate that I will get those with much more
experience than me on this method as well as veterens of winching, auto
launching and other interested glider pilots.

I decided on yahoogroups for at least the following reasons:
-email forum that automatically distributes messages
-searchable email archives
-members can post files/links/photos for others to view
-many idividual and custom settings.

The new forum is at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pulleylaunch/
and is easy to join
(pls email me if you have any difficulties joining or using this group).

Please feel free to join and do not be shy to contribute:
-emails
-links
-photos
-files
or whatever

I have written a description on the home page which compares auto pulley
launching to winching although I do think winching is still a great way
to get airborne.

Here it is:

'A forum to exchange information on the method of launching sailplanes
and other soaring craft via the use of motor vehicles pulleys and rope/wire.

The advantages over winching include:
-requires less equipment to be constructed
-requires less facilities to store the equipment from the weather and theft
-requires less maintenance
-requires less labour (ie with 1:1 the rope is automatically relaid)
-can get gliders launched much quicker than even a double drum winch
(max of 120 launches to 2,000 feet in one day)
-requires less operator skill
-better comfort for the operator
-no problems and lost time due to tangles
-less downtime due to equipment breakdown
-alternative vehicles usually available in case of breakdown
-R & D is done for free by the MV industry (they spend billions each year !)
-no need to transport and store fuel at the airfield
-gives a smoother launch with better tension control
-better safety record
-etc etc etc

1:1 and 2:1 have long and excellent operating history in the sport while 3:1
has been demonstrated with proven benefits
and offers much promise.'
