Hi Grietje.
I would like to put forward a case for the Southern Riverina Gliding Club (Tocumwal).

We may be several hours drive from Sydney, but this usually means less air traffic to deal with.
We are a small club who operate 7 days a week, 12 months of the year.
Being a small club we all work together to make flying fun & safe.
The airfield is very large & has two long & wide runways.
The airfield is largely surrounded by paddocks which make cross country flying ideal. We have several instructors, one of which has over 36,000 hrs experience & has won a few comps as well as having trianed many people to become competent pilots. As this is a tourist area there is plenty of accomodation at reasonable prices, several offer deals for glider pilots & co.
The weather is better than anywhere around Sydney.
The Murray river boasts some of the country's best golf courses & there are many local wineries etc.
There are lots other things to do & visit.

We are contactable through our website http://www.srgc.com.au/

The Southern Riverina Gliding Club is happy to help anyone who wants to learn to fly, do further training or even just do joy flights.

Cheers.
Bernie.

Hi Grietje

Better you refer them to http://www.soaring.org.au as they may get to the
GFA website and the first thing they will see is the red stamp that says
accident a huge turn off for any new person to aviation.

The first paragraph small text centred (baffled look on my face) does try
direct them to http://www.soaring.org.au time and time again web developers
who are glider pilots have offed to help to rectify the GFA web image.

Sydney gliding does offer training they operate weekends and have 2 motor
gliders http://www.sydneygliding.com.au/trial_info.aspx

Dear All,

I often receive email from people who would like to do a joy flight (I am
sure it is called different these days, AEF?) or ab initio course.

We don't do that so I tell them to go to Tocumwal or Benalla.
But there are also requests for flying close to Sydney.

Which club should I refer to?
I always mention the GFA website as well.

Regards,
Grietje

Southern Cross is the main club that does ab initio courses as well as
AEFs. Sydney Gliding basically just do joy flights in motor gliders. They
don't have a "club" as such where they train people to fly. Both operate
out of Camden.

Further afield from Sydney you have Mangrove Mountain, Bathurst or the
club down near Goulburn, whose name escapes me now.
