While reading the announcement for 1.16i, I found a typo in the
NEWS file "New in 1.17" section.
I have also accidentally found a typo in the "New in 1.15"
section, which might need a line rewrap after the fix.

I have not found any documentation about hooking recipes with custom
(non-depcomp) tools into Automake's automatic dependency tracking,
so this describes what I have done to achieve that along with a few
