u should give a outer join in the link type property and use table level
relation between tables.

As if u go to any journal lines (ex: Ledgerjournaltransdaily form ) u will get
such type of functionality is there.if u enter some date which is not in the
period , and validate the journal line u will get the red colour error icon
in the journal line.

there ,then it is a report level issue.
