Hi James,
concerning user group rights you should consider this: you give user group rights on menu items. And these menu items can be integrated at different points in the main (e.g. posting sales orders you can achieve directly from the form salestable (accessed by menu item salestable) and directly under sales / periodic. It´s always teh same menu item !!!
So if one user has access to the menu item "posting sales orders" but not to the menu item "sales orders" he can post sales orders under sales / periodic / posting but nowhere else.

Hi everyone,

Okay Steve, yes basically items with no security right can be accessed by a
user that is not linked to ANY user group so I am not sure is it in the best
practices of Axapta that they say must set security right on any menu
item???  If it is not to those not sure whether to set I recommend you set
one for every menu item element you create this will be default mean the
element has to be set with permissions in at least one group in order to be
accessed.

I am not 100% sure about the next bit but would like to share to see if
anyone else can agree:

The problem I found was that I could set the USER GROUP 'main menu' point
(e.g. a form like sales order) to no acess BUT I COULD NOT SEE THE SUB
ELEMENTS OF THIS (I just assumed they were also no access).  But when I
looked via the user's permission screen they have access to the element AND
I can see the sub elements!!!  It seemed this was because inside the main
menu element there are sub elements (buttons etc) that were set with Full
control (even though I had set the parent element as no access!!!).  So in
summary the problem: USER GROUP screen did not show or allow setting of sub
elements and also when setting the parent as no access this was not passed
down to the sub elements!

Anyway later in the day I tried some more testing and selected in the
permission the whole 'Main menu' list and pressed the 'Cascade'.  Now after
this the sub elements could be seen and set (before this I didn't check
hence so cannot be 100% sure what I tried in the morning actually happened -
i.e. only have my memory from morning testing to rely on so only 95% sure).
So it seems to me the cascade 'reset' everything and with this the
subelements began to appear correctly in the USERGROUPS screen and so could
be set....

Has anyone had similar experience?
Is it maybe because the VAR layer has been replaced several times?

Thanks
James

I cannot be 100% sure of this but I think we can all keep an eye out for
this possible sub element no access problem (maybe it is when new VAR/USR
layer is mixed I am not sure....)
