Be careful... Costing (closing) makes use of the InventRefTransId I believe but I am not sure if it works from Issue (SO) to Reciept (PO) or also the other way so the situation you mention where serveal PO are still all directed at the same SO could be a problem...

In InventTrans the Sales Order refers to one PO but, there might be multiple references from PO's to the same SO. If is becomes a issue i will have to write some code to clear InventRefTransId for the previous PO lines. At this stage it only looks like a reference.
