Sourceforge SVN trunk/axiom is up to date with the Gold version
There are 390 changes.
Apparently the automatic conversion from CVS to SVN is broken
with respect to binary files. They have been fixed.
In the trunk/axiom directory there is a directory called PATCH49-50
that contains a file calle

fine on my Debian Sarge box.
BTW, this time I got a new copy of the tla archive, but would
make clean

./configure
make
be enough?
I am somehow missing a "distclean" target.
Or is the current "clean" tar

apt-get install latex
apt-get install xlib-dev
and the command line reads:
make AWK=nawk
The build is in process.
