You are so right, John! I have many families where the boys took Mom's
surname, for whatever reason! In my greatgrandma's family all of her male
sibs took Lemos for their surname and it took me 3 generations back to see
where the Lemos came from!

He was a great guy, but his name is driving me nuts!
What may even be more mind boggling is that in some rare cases, a male
child may take his mother's surname. Cases in which this may happen may
include:
1) families in which there were no male children born in the previous
generation,
2) for inheritance reasons where the mother's line is wealthy

I'm not quite sure the way I'm supposed to list some of my Portuguese names
on ancestry.com
Example:
Maria de Jesus de Freitas?
What is the surname? de Freitas? Freitas?
Do I list her as
(First Name) Maria de Jesus de (Surname) Freitas ???
Can someone tell me what is correct?

He once said his name was José Joaquim.
He also said it was Joao.
His cousin in Flores told me it was José
Annie,
Use this method:
(First Name) Maria de Jesus de (Surname) Freitas
When you get to the the time period of women without surnames, you'll just
list her as:
First name: Maria de Jesus. Surname:
You'll leave it blank. It's weird, but you'll get used to it.

Listowner,
For those new to Portuguese research and entering names into your genealogy
program do not give the girls their Father's surname! As Cheri stated,
there is a time when there is no surname given in the documents and you
can't do as we do in this country and give the girls their Dad's surname.

I'm glad you confirmed NOT to add father's surname . Ugh- that is so hard to
do because there's so many with the same first name- Marias. I recently did
that on family search so I'll have to go back and delete those last names.
Thank you for the reminder

And are you saying that

Annie,
Yes a different Carvalho family.
The record that says Maria Jose de Freitas is the same person. It could be
a transcription error by the archivist, or the way the priest wrote it.
