You're welcome. When you finally nail down enough information to actually allow
you to research Sao Mateus, feel free to ask for help. There are only a few of
us here that research on Pico. There seem to be lots people working on Sao
Miguel and Sao Jorge. A few on tiny Flores. But, everyone in

The infant mortality rate was high in all the islands (and was probably high in
the whole world; in America most families lost more than one child. If you walk
through an old New England cemetery where people often had family plots, you'll
see many small markers in the form of lambs marking the

Mortality rates were high in general in the western world at the time. Even in
the wealthy. Thomas Jefferson, for example, and his wife had 6 children in 10

Is it just Sao Jorge or did all the islands of the Azores have high
mortality rates in the late 1700's?
It just aches my heart when looking through Obits and seeing so many for
your children (birth to 10 years old).
I've been trying to Google it but having a hard time finding out why ...
I had to go back 22 years to find them in Calheta ... 17 Jan 1739 ... Yes,
the marriage says she's from Norte Grande ... wierd they married in Calheta.
Then I started looking for his parents ... There is an index at the end of
1696-1722 ... Wow, one of the oldest I've seen!

The groom was from Santa Catarina. That's all your document says.
If a bride and groom are from different villages, they are more likely to
get married in the bride's parish.

Thanks Cheri!
I checked Calheta and they weren't listed ... I'll check neighboring
churches.

The Farilhoes are not part of the Azores archipelago. I think they belong
to a district in Portugal itself. I don't know where or how their records
are housed. You can search the FamilySearch.org catalog or try Tombo.pt.

Have just received this information from my aunt and would be interested to
know if anyone can provide me with more information.
Thanks for your help.

Groom's name, he's the widower of, HE is a native ofNot married
with the marriage location of his deceased wife. The priests don't record
that information (although there could be that one priest out there). So
the groom is a native of the Matriz.

In this link (right hand side).
Starting seven lines down ... It appears that Jose is the widower of
Barbara.
After her name there is a description of where they might have married.
Am I correct in assuming they were married in the same church and/or
Freguesia or another church?

Thank you all for your responses. I'll try to see what I can accomplish at
the archive. It would be great if the CCA would put more years online.
