I think we should read the CH, not as in Charles but as in Car.
He may have worked in a lime kiln for it was called 'Caleiro' or forno de
cal. In the record the priest wrote Calneiro. Cal [lime] +neiro
[worker]. The eiro comes from the word 'obr-eiro' one that works; worker,
thus a capenter=car

The word in the document has 2 "i" in it. It's got to be an alcunha. Google
translates says "chalvieiro" is a shawl. Could be a nickname.

Hi Eliseu,
I found the other sisters, the daughters of Luzia Ledo..also two sons.
Mary Conceicas married Charles Mello, of Sao Miguel. They lived in
Cambridge Massachusetts. She died in 1973, she had two children.
Mary dos Anjes married Arthur Silva Fairterceiro of Sao Miguel. They lived

Try Joao Chalveiro. It does look like Chalvieiro. In Ponta Garca, there is
a locale called Calvario, which is not the same of course. Her parents were
Joao Jacinto and Anna Theresa [de Jesus], and none of their married
children used a proper surname. So perhaps Joao adopted a nickname.

You could almost make it anything! Maybe, Chalrioso? Someone that

They gave me different information when I was there. I was asking for
records from the council of Vila Franca. They told me that Ponta Delgada
goes up to 1912 and the others up to 1905. Apparently that is not true.
They told me that Santa Maria goes up to 1911. I don't know if that's true
or not. G
Thanks for posting this list. I was not aware of the Nordeste obits going to
1959. More work to do. Just a minor correction to the Archive records.
When I was there last month I was able to find an obit in Ponta Delgada from
1946, so those records go to at least 1947.
Thanks for all you do.
