I just joined this group so forgive me if this is not an appropriate
request.
I found a marriage record for my great grandparents, I think. It seems my
great grandfaher's surname was Ramos, not Francis. I am trying to verify
this information. My problem is in trying to decipher the handwriti
e I can contribute some day.

search the family? I looked
at the passaportes records but didn't know how to find a particular name as
there wasn't a search box.

you found for him or Rose or
the youngest child, Mary Rose.
I can find nothing on the 6th child (deceased if the 1900 census is
accurate).
I guess this is the type of mystery about family history that keeps us
interested in finding more.
Thanks again.

While researching my English side, baptisms 2 - 3 months after the birth of
a child seemed very common back in the day. Not sure why.

Thanks Cheri.
I am now trying to figure out the original surname (from Sao Miguel). It
would seem my great grandfather's father was Jose F (Francisco?) da Camara.
When I Googled "da Camara" I get info on the ancestry of João Rodrigues da
Câmara from Sao Miguel (born 1460).
So in this example,
Cheri,
I found your article on The GenealogyForum.com regarding Portuguese
Genealogical Research. Very helpful.
Naming Traditions by Doug da Rocha Holmes was equally helpful
(http://www.genealogyforum.com/gfaol/resource/Hispanic/PortNames1.htm). Now
let me know if I am on the right track.
Jose
