I'm now having trouble with my wife's great-grandfather's baptism. It
seems to say they married (recebidos) on the island of S. Miguel without
naming a parish (not very helpful), but then places this parish (from São
Jorge) on S. Miguel island also.

Bill, you got it right. That's how it was written unfortunately. You will
have to find other children's records to see if one of them will state
which parish they belonged to in S. Miguel.
