Hi All,
As many of you know I have been working on the records of Sanrtissimo Salvador Church records since 1995 when I embarked on a project to extract all the marriages on the film covering the years 1836-1883. There are 542 marriages during this period. In Addition I have added a number of marriages from the nearby parish on Nossa Senhora da Estrela. I have entered these marriages in a data base with the undated marriages of their parents of the brides and grooms. As many of you also know Priests had a habit of changing names on documents based on factors we may or may not understand? Woman's names are particularly prone to this. A woman may be known as Rita dos Santos on one record and Rita de Jesus on several records and Rita de Sousa on another but they are all the same woman I figured out many of these families but there some I was not sure of and to try and in my effort to make things accurate I have resorted to many tricks. I had a couple of families the names were Luis de Sousa and Rosa Ferreira and Luis de Sousa and Rosa Moniz. Both couples were about the same age and with the name Luis de Sousa matching and the wives first name of Rosa I suspected they were the same people. One of the couples I had located 4 grandchildren and the other I had located 1 grandchild from two different families. I started looking at the birth records of the grand children in particular the names of the god parents. On the record from the couple with one child (grandmother named Rosa Moniz) the godfathers name was Jacinto Ferreira. He was described as married from the parish and uncle on the mothers side "tio maturno" I now started looking at the birth records of the children of the other couple (grand children of Rosa Ferreira) and the first record I looked at named the god father as Jacinto Fereira tio maturno and the second record named the god father as Jacinto Ferreira from the parish and maternal uncle "tio maturno" at this point I was sure that Rosa Ferreira and Rosa Moniz were the same woman and had two daughters and 5 grandchildren. Suspicion solved. I guess the point is that every record has details that we sometimes over look some of the information in our haste to put families. Looking at this family now the Uncle Jacinto was well liked and respected in the family and two of his nieces wanted him to be the god father or their children.
