I use the total cMs as a guide too, but the chart on the ISOGG wiki is off,
at least with most of the cases I see. 53 cMs is 3rd cousins or 2nd
cousins twice removed?? I find 50ish cMs as more like 6th cousins.
I swear I saw a cM chart with ranges with a lot of overlap which made
better sense.
I have for some time also thought that the shared DNA could partially have
to do with Madeirans settling in the Azores the surname Bettencourt is an
example of that it started off in Madeira . There are others. However I
don't match any Madeirans I don't know if many of them test there are much

Hi John,
Your close match with Cheri is interesting. On a similar note I have posted
that I have more matches with people with origins in Sao Miguel and Flores
then Terceira and Graciosa. Flores and Pico were basically the last two

Nah, I believe the original estimate between my father and John Vasconcelos
was 4th to Distant cousin, which makes sense for 33-34 cMs total. More
like 6th, maybe 7th. John must be thinking of someone else with the 2-4th
cousin level.
Lots of people with Flores ancestry have Sao Miguel

Antonio,
It depends. There is one project participant with 1750. There are some
with 40. There are people who have a lot more endogamy than others. There
are people who are 100% Azorean and people who are not. So your answer is
between 40 - 1750 people.

My Faria line is from Pico traces back to Sao Mateus, Pico in the 1500's
the interesting thing is that it traces to a Baltazar Vieira that married a
Maria de Faria the son was named Manuel Veira de Faria but after a few
generations Vieira was dropped off I should really be a Vieira, go figure.
