I use the total cMs as a guide too, but the chart on the ISOGG wiki is off, at least with most of the cases I see. 53 cMs is 3rd cousins or 2nd cousins twice removed?? I find 50ish cMs as more like 6th cousins. I swear I saw a cM chart with ranges with a lot of overlap which made better sense.

I have for some time also thought that the shared DNA could partially have to do with Madeirans settling in the Azores the surname Bettencourt is an example of that it started off in Madeira . There are others. However I don't match any Madeirans I don't know if many of them test there are much

Nah, I believe the original estimate between my father and John Vasconcelos was 4th to Distant cousin, which makes sense for 33-34 cMs total. More like 6th, maybe 7th. John must be thinking of someone else with the 2-4th cousin level. Lots of people with Flores ancestry have Sao Miguel

My Faria line is from Pico traces back to Sao Mateus, Pico in the 1500's the interesting thing is that it traces to a Baltazar Vieira that married a Maria de Faria the son was named Manuel Veira de Faria but after a few generations Vieira was dropped off I should really be a Vieira, go figure.
