Hi Cheri,
Thanks for that find - I'll look further into it and see what I can find.
It's been difficult, as I'm having a hard time finding any vital records
later on in New Bedford (or Massachusetts) for any of them passed a certain
point, so I'm wondering what happened to them after that.
Elaine,
They went to meet the brother of Claudina, Francisco Silva, 317 S. Front
St, New Bedford? It looks like baby Francisco died on the way. I searched
Ancestry's Passenger arrivals with this to call it up (It's against
Ancestry's Terms of Service for me to post the image):
Cheri Mello
Yeah, he was in the right month, with the right ship, just off on the year.
It happens. If all the family members are correct, then it's him. You can
search for the arrival in America a couple of weeks after. Although I just
start looking in America on the next day, as I don't want to miss them.
I have a gazillion MELLOs. Was he from Sao Miguel island?

Thanks - I didn't think about being held at Ellis, and will look further
into that.
But I thought I found the passports for the family in 1902 - the link
doesn't seem to be working at the moment, but this is it here:

If he said he arrived on the Donna Maria on 18 Apr 1901 and the ship record
said the Donna Maria arrived in New York on 18 Apr 1901 then I would blow off
the age

So, after almost 2 years of trying to get information from the USCIS
So, after almost 2 years of trying to get information from the USCIS for my
paternal grandfather, Antonio Mello, I came home to find a CD from the
USCIS - I was so excited!
Then I put it in the computer, and found two PDFs - one which was a cover
letter saying that they couldn't find any
