My book is the 2002 (3rd edition).
Chapter Five: Other Resources and Information of Potential Value
(if you go to your public library, look for a chapter with a title like
that).

Under the heading titled "Crew Lists."  This happens to be pages 110-111 in
the 3rd edition.

If your ancestor "jumped ship," this refers to him being a crew member on a
ship.  I listed the ports that the Portuguese typically immigrated through.
Dr. Colletta also lists Detroit, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Seattle.
He also briefly discusses stowaways, stating that they were usually
discovered at some point.

There are no surviving crew lists before the years I listed in my previous
email.
