Erastus Bartlett was the person he went to work for when he came to the US.
Jose(ph) nameshim as his "adopted" father but I have a feeling he never
adopted him but he took his surname for US records (you know the Portuguese
naming thing). He is listed in 1870 living with Erastus and

Well, with Faial (old spelling Fayal) you could try the NEPS database. I
don't think all freguesias (villages) of Faial are represented, but all you
have to do is check the births for a Jose born to a Erastus Gervais.
Erastus is more of a unique name.

I had a friend of mine look up your records and here is what we found
so it look like your Joseph was born on the island of Faial, Azores.
Now what his real surname is, remains to be seen.

Did you check the birth/marriage records of Joseph Bartlett? Do any of
these give any inkling of where the father was born? You say he was
adopteddo you have his adoption papers? He was only with this family
from sometime between 1860-1870 and sometime between 1870-1880. Remember
I have recently uncover from my mothers pages some more information on my
Acorean heritage:
My g grandfather Jose Gerevas born Feb. 2 1852 in the Acores arrived in the
USA sometime in the early 1860's with his brother. Jose Gerevas was soon
adapted by an Erastus Harvey Bartlett from Deering NH.. J
