U.S. Censuses are not released for public viewing until 72 years after the
census was taken. So the 1950 won't be released until sometime in 2020. You
have a few more years to wait. Cheri

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name Abbreviation on Marriage Record
Hello!
I just unearthed the marriage record of one set of ancestors of mine. It is
fairly neat writing and I don't have much trouble deciphering most of it.
I can make out
RR=Rodrigo Rodrigues, the author of "Genealogies of Sao Miguel and Santa
Maria islands." I would not go looking for your family on those islands. Or
any other island until you trace them back in time and it tells you that
they came from another island. No Goose Chases for you!

Awesome! Thank you! What is the RR book?

I was reading the names and I was thinking "Sao Jorge" and when you
provided the link it was! (I like to do that.)
Anyway, I have Nunes Gil in my Sao Jorge ancestry. (Norte Grande.) Not sure
how common it is, but it did exist in this timeframe.

By the way, there's a "Quadros" family in the RR book

I have ancestry in S. Jorge and can say it is not too common there, but
have come across a few families. It is Gil. It can be derived from a
first Portuguese name Gil or, it could have had its origins with the
Flanders, (French/German)

Could the Gil/l be another spelling for Guill?

Jeremy, I agree with Cheri, the name is Gil and it's certainly a surname
although James Guill's book The Azores Island, a History, spells it with
two 'L's'. I think that the wife is dead because he says 'sua mulher, da
funta (with an 'a') Maria ...

Awesome!
Thank you so much Cheri! I really appreciate the clarification. Figures that
my record should be an oddball. ;-) my luck!
I'm amazed it really was Gil! I'd never seen that and due to its shortness I
had assumed it was an abreviation. Is Gil a fairly rare last name?
