I've been hunting for a passport for Alexander, and came across this - a
real possibility for Alexander's mother ...
7 Nov 1897
Passport for Rosa Delfina de Borba from Calheta ... headed to New Bedford
...
Never discount it! My grandmom said she came in as Maria Vieira da Silva
and I found her on the Passports as Maria de Azevedo!! LOL

Thank you! My great-great-grandmother is Roza Delfina - I'll look into this
to see if this might be a second marriage, though I don't think so, since
I've never seen a reference to her as Delfina de Bettencourt.

Eric, it starts on the bottom of the previous page with Maria Delfina, 20
years old, daughter of Joaquim d'Azevedo da Silveira and Roza Delfina. They
are going to the United States (in margin) and are from S. Jorge.

The 3 ports for the Azores are Angra, Horta, and Ponta Delgada on Sao
Miguel. So that is where they went to register too.
Most of our ancestors left from the nearest port. But if they needed to get
going right at that time, they may have went with the next boat no matter
which port it sailed
Eric, Sao Jorge people generally would have gone to Angra. Some, in the
early days, went to Horta too.

I haven't looked through the passports on this site yet:
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/passaportes/Default.aspx
If my ancestors are from Topo, São Jorge, should I be looking at Angra do
Heroísmo? The only options on the site are Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo
and Horta. Were there
