Each council (county) has one Matriz or Mother Church. Some large concelhos (councils) have 2 (that's only on Sao Miguel island though). Santa Maria = 1 Sao Miguel = 8 Terceira = 2 (sorta - one is really the Cathedral or the Diocese seat) Graciosa = 1 Sao Jorge = 2 Pico = 3 Faial = 1 Flores = 2 Co
