Do NOT click on the link Linda provided. It is not correct.
www.libertyellisfoundation.org
Usually, I just type www.ellisisland.org and let it redirect me.
All this is to be typed into your ADDRESS bar, NOT a search engine.

Have you searched the Ellis Island records? They are accessible through
liberyellisfoundation.org or via Ancestry, FamilySearch, or Steve Morse's

Dave,
After looking back at all the postings concerning Velma Cotta, I think that
the Cotta name is
likely that of the ex husband she divorced in 1928. I think we should take
the search off this group. I will continue to help you with it though. My

Eric, thank you very much. The dates coming from Brazil to the USA
would be 1920 to 1927 or so, I think. Name is Velma Cotta, born about
1908-1909. This is a shot in the dark since I know so little about
her. Thanks very much.

Dave,
It's a searchable database. Give me a name and time period and I'll look it
up.

Eric,
Thanks. Do you know if it is an alphabetical listing or do I need to
know the port of entry or departure?
Thanks. Dave

Dave,
Ancestry.com has an index to California ports arrivals 1919-1957, but it's
not free.

Do want a site from South America to California. But don't know which
port or date.
Have looked at a few of the lists you recommended but have a 'few' more to go.
Thanks.

Oh, I thought you said you wanted a site FROM South America, not FROM
California. I don't think that any U.S. state or the U.S. government has
records leaving America. Maybe there is. If anyone knows of records
leaving America on CA will chime in, I'm sure.

Cheri,
Thanks for the info. Will look at this site for sure. I was hoping
there was a site for the California ports that had an alphabetical
search like Ellis Island has. Since I have so little information to
use for searching I need an alphabetical search. Thanks.

Dave,
I doubt that there would be a free site for ships sailing from South
America. Each country (whether it was in S.America or Europe) had their own
procedures for emigrating out of their country. It would be best to check
to check the Family History Library Catalog for your country and then l
