I was told by some relatives our pre-immigration last name meant
barn. So maybe it was Manuel Sousa of the barn. If this was the
case, I can understand why his son would want to change his fortune.

haystack, or hay loft. Maybe the origin was a guy with unruly blond hair.

Manuel Sousa Palheiro is someone different. My greatgrandfather went
as John Palheiro Souza in the US. Great suggestions for how to find
our more! I will start looking into them now.
