Eleanor,
Do you have any idea as to the time frame your grandmothers parents came to the US? The 1910 census will tell the year they indicated to the US. That will give you a clue as to a time frame to look on the Ellis Island Site. (On the site you sometimes have to play around and try different names and spellings) If you can find them and they came from Sao Miguel then the CCA web site has passport records for that time frame and if you find them there it will say what town they came from. In order to search records in the Acores you have to know the village they came from as all records are recorded by the village. I cannot tell you much about Fayal records as all of my research has been in Sao Miguel. Lopez from East Cambridge and Arlington, Massachusetts. His parents were Domingo Lopez and Florinda Armaral from St. Falal Island. He had seven brothers and 1 sister all born in St. Falal. My grandmother was Mary Perry Madruga from Gloucester, Mass. all her brothers and sisters were born in the US but her parents Manual Madruga and Philippa Perry Cardozo were from the Atlantic Islands according to the 1910 Federal Census. I have a lot of info and records about my grandparents but have had a real difficult time finding info about their relatives and parents. I have a little info about the Madrudga's but I cannot find anything on Domingo or Florinda and their children except from my grandfather. Where do I start? I belong to Ancestry and Folder3 and have done a lot of research on Family Search (free website). I am going to join other geology websites. I have had great luck finding info about my father's German background but my mother's side has become quite difficult. Any help will be really appreciated.
