Oh Nancy- that's funny to me because it said "oficial de Fereiros" so I thought
oficial meant an official. You might be right. That would make more sense. So
the word that's throwing me off is the title of oficial . Thanks so much.

A ferreiro is actually a blacksmith, and yes, this was a key position in a
village.

My guess would be that he put shoes on horses and mules and made other useful
objects out of iron.
