The information you give is too short to help you. I myself have Pais or Paes and this not makes me a direct liner from a Paes/Pais family. Also there is not such name as Mathew in Portuguese (unless the guy has his birth in the States...) Is it Mateus? Or Matias?... What is the complete name? Is he single Mathew Pais? No other names?
