I have a case in which two boys were both named Manuel and both survived into adulthood. They were born on Flores in the later part of the 19th century into a family with numerous children. One seems to have gone simply by “Manuel”, the other (perhaps the younger?) by a compound name. I don’t

Hi Debbie, Primeiro is masculine and primeira is feminine. D' is a contraction for "de" meaning of. Este means this. So the phrase is "first of this," many times followed by nome (name). When a family has multiple Marias, you will see them letting you know if it's Maria #1, 2, or 3. They could all
