I've been to the Azores in both the first half of May and the end of the month, and both times there wasn't excessive rain. Sure, there can be showers, maybe even an entire rainy day at worst, but I truly doubt you'd have rain the whole time. In fact, I think that May's a lovely time to be there -- not too warm and humid yet; reminds me of my native San Francisco Bay Area then. Only drawback, if it matters, is that the Azores' iconic blue hydrangeas aren't in bloom yet. Katharine.
