The program I wrote, 'shadowmountrsync' is I believe on the Wikki and
is pretty extensively self-documented. That might be the one you are
referring to on the Wikki...
In particular, the required files are all documented. The setup is all
pretty automated since it pretty much figures things out.

I installed a new enclosure on our BackupPC server. It has 4 TB of space. I
noticed that fdisk would not work with anything over 2048 GB. I thus ended
using GNU Parted for my partitioning. I noticed that it would only let me
use ext2.
Does it make a difference if I use ext2 or ext3? If so, how d

Confusing, eh? I'll try to clarify:
To set up a client, just copy the c:\backuppc directory. Aside from
vshadow, nothing's specific to a Windows version or bit
And that's why I advise my clients to close their Microsoft Lookout when
they go for the evening.

Nothing will properly handle backing up files currently being written

between the OS and the disk/controller hardware.

BackupExec System Recovery are examples) do
I have a large but still limited amount of total storage space

between the "primary" NAS and the "BUNAS" that will hosting BackupPC's

The least critical are of course media files, and in fact they don't

This does not do open files. Unfortunately...
How would you restore an "image" of the PC exactly at backup time? It
seems like you'd need to install, restore, reboot, fix all errors, etc..
I mean, rsync would have to work SOMEHOW... :)
Heck, I exclude tons of file types (.exe .com .dll .oc
That sounds simple enough and something I found initially when doing my
research. However, I do not believe this also can handle open files, such as
Outlook's .pst files or other documents open by the user, such as system files.
I want to be able to back up all of these files without the end-u

Personally, I use a batch file to install the client. You have to
configure the rsyncd.conf and rsyncd.secrets
Using this download:

and these instructions:

I have been using BackupPC for some time successfully with other Linux clients

Hi Craig,
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, some files have changed.
I know, as I have performed specific tests on a file I know changes daily. In
summary, I know that:
1. That the file is updated daily.
2. That the file is backed up correctly (daily).
3. That the different versions of t

That probably means the files haven't changed. That number isn't
the backup number. Instead, it is just a number that identifies
the different version
