The project is very mature (I've been using for over 12 years), so constant
updates aren't really needed.

For a new installation what's advised? backuppc-3.3.1 or the older (and
seemingly unmaintained) 4.0.0alpha3 ?
Project doesn't look very active and that's areal shame because I think it has
some very strong points.
