Just to say that I have now solved this, the $Conf{RsyncdUserName} is
set within the server config file rather than on a per host basis, does
make sense now I see it.

I've also got problems with the link error when I change the topDir from
the default install location (var/lib/backuppc) to a mount on a raid
array, ie moving all the subdirectories within topDir to the new location.
I've tried mounting the raid on a partition at root level
'/backup-files', and
I'm getting loads of
BackupPC_link got error -3 when calling MakeFileLink
in the main log file, after i changed the topDir value.
The install in on kubuntu and is version 3,
The initial topDir was 'var/lib/backuppc' and I changed this to
'/backup_files' via the cgi front end, which is a folder
