Hi Les & David,
I also run BackupPC with VISUDO and also get the 512 error on localhost

Since then, my hard drive mounted at /var/lib/backuppc has failed. I

On the archiving server, backuppc would ssh-copy-id localhost ??

Now that's a thought! I didn't realize this.
Hmmm, so does backuppc need a key for local host like the remote

The problem appears to be fixed by running the command:

Hi All,
About a year ago, I implemented the Sudoers technique for backuppc.

Hi Luis,
Even before I got your note, I think figured out the problem. With so
many changes since I started rebuilding the archiving server, problem
generating keys, getting keys generated and then deciding to not use
root logon, I simply forgot that I had not generated keys for backuppc
as a sim

Hi Luis (and others),
I've taken a little time to study the visudo approach to running
BackupPC instead of using phrase-less keys for root logon at the client
machine. This is a much lower risk, indeed.
On Ubuntu, Vim is the default editor for visudo with Vim-tiny included
in the distribution.

Hi Luis (and others),
Since I must run back and forth between the machines, is there any way
to use a sneaker-LAN (e.g. USB memory stick) to transport the keys?

Tino,
Having gotten accustomed to Fedora, I prefer working as root when required
instead of having to enter lines twice -- once without sudo, error, then
retype it with sudo. Also, root can navigate to some directories that
normal user can't go. Once I get more used to using sudo, I may put root
