DD'ing does a sector copy so does go faster it does not deal with hardlinks etc.. rather just teh data occupied by that space on the HD.  I have tried multiple ways to copy backuppc best by far is some form of sector copy like DD.. if single drive.. ghost.. drive image etc also work well.
