Root may be able to log in to the remove system, but can the backuppc user?
Try this:

I would bet that it's prompting you to accept the key for this new server.

Im in the process of adding some linux clients to the backuppc server.
Ive successfully setup one server on the backup server.
The second one is giving me problems.
I set it up the same way, i can ssh from one box to the other as root
with no password.
The shared keys seem to be working correctl
