volumes are stored remotely on a file server; only the file daemon is
running on the mail server, and its files (only state and pid, if I
understand correctly) are under /var anyway.
I forgot to say that I've already checked the file lists without finding
anything suspect.

switching to a full backup strategy; unfortunately that would not solve
tho size issue, which at this point is becoming quite puzzling :-)

Where are stored your bacula volumes ? If you use a location under one of the
trees: /etc /root or /opt, you would back up your own volumes, which could
explain this.
And then, the previous advice (list files jobid=xxx) is still valid. You might
